Glenlivet Distillery produces Speyside single malt Scotch whisky and is located near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland. It has operated almost continuously since it was founded in 1824. It only closed during World War II by government decree and remained opened throughout the Great Depression that plagued the world globally. Today, the Glenlivet brand is the biggest selling single malt whisky in the United States and the second biggest selling single malt brand globally.
George Smith was the founder of the Glenlivet brand and was the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. It was during the 1700s where George and other distilleries were operating illegally until the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. George and his youngest son John Gordon Smith received their license and established the Glenlivet Distillery in 1824. George established a second distillery in 1849 and by 1855, even at full capacity for both distilleries, was unable to meet rising demand. George decided to build a new and bigger distillery and production commenced at the new plant in 1859. The Distillery draws water from Josie’s Well and the malt comes from Portgordon, a small village in Moray, while the bottling is done in the Chivas Brothers plant.
Glenlivet 12 Years is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky and is Glenlivet’s signature expression. For a modern twist to this expression, Master Distiller Alan Winchester marries traditional oak casks and American first-fill casks for the maturation process. Selective use of both these casks provides a smooth, creamy sweetness that mingles harmoniously with the delicate flavours and complex fruity tones.
