First introduced in 1998, Tanqueray Malacca Gin is based on a recipe developed by Charles Waugh Tanqueray dating back to 1839. He was known to travel extensively in search of exotic spices to include in his gins and created a spiced spirit inspired by his expedition of the southwestern coast of the Malay Peninsula. The gin became a cult favorite among bartenders and cocktail aficionados, but was sadly discontinued in 2001.
Relaunched in early 2013, Tanqueray Malacca is a sweeter gin with less juniper emphasis and more citrus than the classic style. Originally introduced in the late 1990s, Malacca was discontinued after a short lifespan but has been resurrected after gradually assuming cult status among cocktail revivalist bartenders as a good substitute for the original Old Tom styles of gin.
